Do online applications really work?

I have applied to several jobs in the past three months online and I haven’t heard back from not a one of them. I’ve applied to the movie theatre, bookstore, the drugstore, a few fast-food chains, and the supermarket. Do those applications really get sent because I find it odd that none of them have called me back. I know it is tough times, but one of those places is bound to have an opening.
